The final stage of the Cloud 9 Restaurant redevelopment!

Posted 6 March 2025

Falls Creek is the resort for foodies. With over 28 different places to eat and drink in winter, there is a flavour for every tastebud and not enough days (or nights) in the week to try them all. Our bars and restaurants are a big part of what makes Falls Creek so unique, and our amazing venue owners and operators are always looking for ways they can make the experience even better!

One of the venues undergoing a major redevelopment is the Cloud 9 Restaurant, thanks to the ongoing partnership between Falls Creek Ski Lifts and Traverse Alpine Group (TAG).

Cloud 9 Restaurant is situated on top of the mountain and in the heart of our ski field. It is the perfect place for a coffee break in between runs or a delicious ‘on snow’ lunch of pizza, pasta and comfort food. The building is our Snowsports School hub with lesson meeting areas right outside and a Falls Creek Sports retail store for all those last-minute winter essentials.

Over the past few seasons, you may have noticed some changes to this iconic building at the top of Halley’s Comet chairlift. That’s because the massive redevelopment has been spread across three summers! Each winter the restaurant and building have been open and operational, but in the summer, it has been a hive of construction activity with significant upgrades taking place.

What has changed so far?

The first two summers of construction have seen major structural changes to the building. The terrace has been partially covered for protection and extended to offer a much larger area to enjoy the stunning mountain views. A new retail space has opened for the Falls Creek Sports store to ensure we have everything you need including a great range of gloves, goggles, helmets, beanies and other winter essentials.

Accessibility has been improved significantly with an entrance ramp and an internal elevator replacing stairs making facilities easier to access for all guests. A new state-of-the-art kitchen has been installed, complete with a new pizza oven, to offer breakfast and lunch to guests. The improvements to the kitchen and access across the multiple levels has seen huge improvements in the ability to provide lunches and snacks for our world class Snowsports School kids programs, Snowclub and Junior Workshop.

The third and final stage!

This summer, the project is going through the third and final stage of the redevelopment, which will be completed in time for winter.

The new roof sees high ceilings and huge windows all facing north to make the most of the spectacular views looking across to Spion Kopje and ensures the area is warm and cosy under the winter sun. There is a large new semi -enclosed area to offer wind protection and shelter from the snow, whilst still providing those incredible views and sunshine on bluebird days.

A new bar service area upstairs in the mezzanine level will open providing additional room for all guests.

Local innovation at work

Several local firms have been involved in the redevelopment, including Duggan & Hanlon Constructions, Sendit Architecture and Kusch Consulting Engineers who are all from the North-East Victoria region, as well as Melbourne and Sydney based NMBW Architecture Studio and Cave Urban Architects.

This local expertise has been invaluable as the team manage the unique challenges of working in an alpine environment. At 1600m above sea level, the Cloud 9 Restaurant is proudly one of the highest buildings in Australia! This redevelopment also has a strong focus on the environment across all aspects of the project, says Lee Duggan from Duggan & Hanlon Constructions.

“We are utilising sustainable and recycled materials throughout the building fabric whilst maximising insulation through thermally broken windows and design to capture all that the sun can offer.”

We are super excited to welcome you back to Falls Creek and the newly renovated Cloud 9 Restaurant this winter! These improvements will ensure an even greater guest experience with increased seating capacity, greater accessibility and a beautiful new semi-enclosed area overlooking Spion Kopje to enjoy your coffee or lunch whilst admiring the views.
