Planning to visit Falls Creek for the first time this winter and want to make the experience as smooth (and shred-ful) as possible? Or are you returning to the resort and want to brush up on your knowledge? Read on for our top tips to save time, and headaches, this winter on the slopes!
First things first, make sure you book ALL your lift tickets, lessons and rentals before you leave for the high country.
Not only will this save you time when you first arrive on the mountain, but if you buy more than 7 days in advance, you’ll save up to 35%! When you do arrive in the village, head to Falls Creek Sports, Slalom Plaza or Falls Creek Sports, Village Bowl to pick up your lift tickets and rentals. Lift tickets and Epic Australia Passes can also be collected from our pick up machines in either ATS, and Gebi’s, or The Board Lounge!
Our top tip: Arrive before 3pm the day prior to your lift ticket and rental booking to grab these on your way up to your accommodation. Meaning you can head straight for the slopes in the morning.
As the roads can get slippery in winter, it’s best to think about chains before you get to Mt Beauty.
In the declared snow season, all vehicles MUST carry appropriate snow chains for their vehicles. Not only does this keep you safe when travelling up the mountain but gives you peace of mind in case of changing conditions. We recommend stopping at Ray’s Ski Shop in Myrtleford, where the helpful team will fit you out and have you on your way in no time!
If you’re driving up the mountain, be sure to book your Resort Entry permit online in advance. This will allow you to leave your car in our designated parking bays for the duration of your stay.
Geared up and heading up Halley’s Comet for your first lesson?
Before heading into the Snowsports office to find your meeting point, look for the large sign opposite Cloud 9 which details which area your designated lesson is in. All Snowclub and Junior Workshop lessons are located out the front of Cloud 9. Head left towards Drover’s Dream and Towers chair after unloading from Halley’s Comet Chairlift and you will spot the kids-only zone.
Top tips for lessons:
- For Snowclub lessons, registration and check in opens at 9:15am and closes at 9:30am. Junior Workshop drop off is at 9:30am. Please note the lift takes 6-10 minutes to ride.
- Head to Cloud 9 before lessons to warm up and get familiar with the landscape.
- Be prepared with all medicine you or any children will need throughout the lesson. All participants are responsible for carrying their own medication in Snowsports lessons.
- Lift tickets need to be kept in an upper left side pocket. Make sure your outer jacket features this.
If you’re staying near Village Bowl, you can get everything that you need right there!
Grab a lift up on Gully Chair by picking up your lift ticket at Gebi’s, before taking Eagle Express up to Cloud 9. While you’re in the Village Bowl, don’t forget to visit the friendly teams in Falls Creek Sports and Ski & Boot Co for all your equipment needs.
Wondering what gear you’ll need on the slopes apart from jacket and pants? Let us help you.
Neck buffs and warmers are strongly recommended, especially on windy days to keep the heat in. Go for thick waterproof gloves and wear enough layers appropriate for the weather and time of year. Cold and wintry conditions call for two layers minimum, whereas spring may only need one layer or lighter layers. Natural fibres such as wool and merino are great to keep you warm, while being quick drying from snow and sweat. Head to any of our retail stores, Falls Creek Sports, The Board Lounge or Ski & Boot Co across the mountain to fit yourself out in winter warmers!
When wearing snowboard or ski boots for the first time, many of us make the same mistakes which lead to sore and wet feet!
Only put socks on inside boots and avoid thermals or bulk fabric as this will cause discomfort. Ski or snowboard specific socks are essential to keep your feet from being sore and wet. These can be purchased at all of our retail outlets. Ensure your snow pant powder cuffs are over your boot not inside, as this leads to snow going inside the boot, which isn’t fun. Keep your boots done up, even when walking, to prevent rubbing and blisters.
Before you even hit the slopes, make sure to read the Alpine Responsibility Code and save Ski Patrols number, +61 03 5758 3502, on your phone in case of any incidents on the mountain.
If you have any questions when in the village, look for our friendly Guest Services team members in bright red jackets. Otherwise, anyone in Falls Creek uniform will be able to help you!
Welcome to Falls Creek and we hope you have a magical winter with us!
